bet365 Handicap, 5f
Topweight Korker makes his reappearance in the opener and this stiff five could suit. He faces some tough competition from the likes of the lightly raced pair Auditor and Shanko, while course-and-distance winner Amazonian Dream returns seeking a hat-trick.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Kimngrace
Justified favoritism in Haydock maiden (6f) when last seen seven months ago and may well build on that win; possibilities off bottom weight on handicap debut.
bet365 Esher Cup Handicap, 1m
Most of the market protagonists are making their handicap debuts, which makes this year’s Esher Cup quite the puzzle. Blue Trail makes plenty of appeal with race fitness on his side, but the juvenile form of Ring Of Beara and Wanees makes them big dangers.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Ring Of Beara
Came up a little short in Newmarket Group 3 when last seen, but was impressive at Ffos Las the time before and remains open to further progress; he has the recent trends on his side of him, as the topweight won the last two runnings of this contest; interesting.
William Hill Extra Places Every Day Handicap Hurdle, 2m
Gordon Elliott and Nicky Richards both send a pair of runners to this race, which could develop into a match between their last-time-out winners Platinumcard and Parisencore. Eclair De Beaufeu, Elliott’s other runner, is dangerously handicapped off his current mark.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Platinum card
Developed into a very useful Flat performer last summer (for Keith Dalgleish) and duly made the most of a tasty mark on his handicap hurdle/stable debut at Ayr three weeks ago; he had to work quite hard in the end but 7lb rise still leaves him in credit; the one to beat.
bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes (Group 3), 1m2f
Just the three runners for what should be a tactical affair. Mostahdaf ended last season with a pair of victories, latterly in the Group 3 Darley Stakes, and he sets the standard under a penalty. Foxes Tales and Juan Elcano need to bounce back from below-par runs.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Mostahdaf
Sole defeat (six starts) came when badly hampered just inside the final 2f in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot (good to firm); won two Listed races either side of that and he asserted in tidy fashion in Group 3 at Newmarket (good) in October when upped to 1m1f on final outing; 1m2f looks within reach and he may well be open to further progress.
William Hill Highland National Handicap Chase, 3m6½f
I See You Well has been thriving of late and has marathon form, which gives him an obvious chance. He accounted for Poppa Poutine at Fontwell last time but the biggest danger could be Irish raider Dubai Devils, who won over 4m at Hexham last time.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: School Lane
Former runner-up in Downpatrick’s Ulster National (3m4f) and was in winning form over 2m1f/2m5f earlier this season; he ran perfectly well back at Downpatrick over 2m3f the last time and he should go well off his light weight from him.
bet365 Mile (Group 3), 1m2f
Last year’s Sussex Stakes winner Alcohol Free makes her reappearance and she is 12lb clear on ratings, without taking her allowances into account. Mutasaabeq was impressive on return and has the fitness edge, but faces a tough task against the three-time Group 1 winner.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Alcohol Free
Talented filly who won the Cheveley Park Stakes as a juvenile and proved a high-class miler last term, winning the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot and Sussex Stakes at Goodwood; below par in the QEII on final start, having raced freely (not for the first time); now goes in hood and drops back in class; Ella sets a tall standard on her best form.
bet365 Classic Trial, (Group 3), 1m2f
John Gosden has won this race a record nine times and Franz Strauss should not be underestimated. Goldspur sets the standard form after a Group 3 win as a juvenile, but the once-raced River Thames could be a huge player for Aidan O’Brien.
SPOTLIGHT TIP: Cash
Shamardal colt who twice went through the sales for six figures; created a favorable impression at Newmarket (1m, good) on sole 2yo start, picking up nicely to lead inside the final 1f then pushed out; looks a very useful prospect and is one to follow.
