Aston Villa squad numbers 2022/2023: Jacob Ramsey could get wish as Lucas Digne and Diego Carlos battle for key shirt

Aston Villa plan to add further additions to their ranks over the coming weeks to add to the business they’ve already completed to bring in Robin Olsen, diego charlesBoubacar Kamara and Philippe Coutinho on permanent deals for a combined fee of just short of £50million. Elsewhere, Villa are also set to announce their new Castore kits for the forthcoming season having signed a “multi-year deal” with the Merseyside sportswear giant.

Ahead of the new season, BirminghamLive looks at the squad numbers available for Steven Gerrard’s new-look group, with a number of slots remaining vacant ahead of 2022/23.

Following Matt Targett’s £13million sale to Newcastle, the No.3 shirt is up for grabs. That number will likely go to Lucas Digne who could revert from his current Villa number 27. worthy has held the No.3 shirt at previous clubs Lille and Roma. He was 12 at Everton, 19 at Barcelona and 21 at PSG while, internationally, he tends to keep the No.18 shirt. However, No.3 is also admired by new boy Diego Carlos. The Brazilian made a name for himself wearing that very number for Nantes prior to becoming No.20 during his time at Sevilla. Diego Carlos’s Instagram profile is also ‘d.carlos03’.

Elsewhere and fellow new recruit Boubacar Kamara donned the No.4 shirt at Marseille, the current number that’s taken up by injured defender Ezri Konsa at Villa. In his three caps for France, Kamara has taken the No.13 shirt which is currently vacant at Aston Villa.

Other notable numbers include that of the No.9 shirt. Loaned-out striker Wesley was given that at the start of last season but that iconic number will become vacant knowing his loan at Internacional SC in Brazil doesn’t expire until January 1, 2023. One of Danny Ings or Ollie Watkins will be favorites to take that very number, while Gerrard is hopeful of adding another centre-forward to his ranks before transfer deadline day.

Other vacant strips include No.14 (previously worn by Conor Hourihane), No.22 (Bjorn Engels), No.26 (Martinez in 2020/21), No.34 (Jake Doyle-Hayes) and No.37 (Mungo Bridge ).

Jacob Ramsey, meanwhile, could be in line for an upgrade knowing he’s held his No.41 shirt since 2018. Morgan Sanson’s No.8 could be offered up to Ramsey. Coutinho was No.23 last term and, with Emi Buendia likely to keep the No.10, he could well opt to retain that number.

Here’s a reminder of Villa’s current squad numbers from last season with the list set to be updated in the week leading up to the Premier League season-opener down at Bournemouth on Saturday, August 6.
